Affordability of Tiny Homes. AFFORDABILITY is key to living a comfortable life, but which option is better for finances — living in a Tiny Home or staying more flexible and mobile and choosing year round RV Camping if and when one is interested in downsizing or retiring?

Here’s a few of our thoughts on the matter, noting we purchased 6 Tiny Home Camping Friendly Lots in 2025 out in the middle of nowhere in the New Mexico desert. Perks of an RV include a driver and passenger have their things with them. Traveling with pets may or may not be better with an Recreational Vehicle as your method of transportation. Is it better than an airplane with a dog or cat in tow? Yes. Is it faster or less expensive to get somewhere? More than likely not.
Initial up front costs for Raw Land are involved with Tiny Home Builds. If you can add Solar and truck in or cistern fresh water, the property is already at a low utilities cost advantage. Adding power to a property from the lical utility company often isn’t worth it with proper solar. Wind Power can be added. Solar chargers for Electric Cars and Electric Bicycles (eBikes) come in handy.
RV Campers one needs to ensure are properly licensed, insured, and tagged. They must be new in most campgrounds (less than 20 years old) to be allowed to park in some areas so plan by 10 years for the units to have resale shelf life. One also must keep engines running in RVs or in the trucks that pull trailers. Gas prices to tow are greatly increased and vehicles that tow weight and have proper brakes to slow or stop them are often of a large size and are costly to tag, license, insure, and operate.
A WELL AND SEPTIC SYSTEM ADDS CONSIDERABLE COST AND MAY BE REQUIRED BY THE COUNTY TO INSTALL FOR ANY TINY HOME BUILT. On a lot big enough for RV and Tiny Home with no deed restrictions on use of the property, a well can be shared; however, so can a Special Event Rental Bathroom complete with a company that takes away debris for you one may not want to mess with… and units can be rented that are wheelchair friendly complete with proper private toilets, sinks, bathtubs and or single or multiguest bath house style showers.
Tiny Home concepts also can comfortably include outdoor kitchens, outdoor fire pits, and shade areas with comfort seating outdoors too. Add a few atriums around or screened areas and one tiny home becomes the area one spends time to sleep while the great outdoors gifts a nearby place to play, to exercise, to watch TV on outdoor movie screens, and to relax.
If your lifestyle goal is to collect stuff, neither home choice will be appropriate. But if you are looking to downsize and to build something cool yourself to enjoy a minimalist version of a place to store Pirate Treasure, consider buying a travel van instead of RV, a food truck that tows your own grill and or bath trailer, and dragging them to a lot where you build a Tiny House. That way no matter where you chose to buy and build a tiny home if you decide to collect lots, one is always ready for guest for an awesome Yard Party.
